The Summer Bambird Scramble may be over, but there’s NO OFF SEASON in Mahj!
We’re keeping our local community connected, playing and meeting new people during the break before the Fall Bambird Scramble officially kicks off September 14.
No Off Season Mahj is completely FREE and open to the Mahjong in the Sun community. We’ll be using our Spond community group as a place for local players to connect, with the Events feature serving as our virtual “tables.” Players can create a table when they want to play, invite others or open spots for fellow Mahj’ers to join.
And because everything is more fun with a little friendly competition, we’re adding a No Off Season Leaderboard! After each match, players can submit their scores and climb the leaderboard throughout the month, with weekly challenges + prizes along the way.
Think of No Off Season as a fun preview of the social side of the Bambird Scramble — scheduling matches, meeting new players, keeping score and having a reason to get more mahjong on your calendar.
Then on September 14, we’re off and running with the real thing! Fall Bambird Scramble players will move over to Mahj in the City’s custom Bambird Scramble portal, which is specifically designed to make scheduling matches, tracking scores and participating in the league seamless.
So join us on Spond, grab a seat at a table (or create your own!) and let’s keep the tiles clicking until Fall Bambird Scramble begins.

HOW OUR “NO OFF SEASON” WORKS
1. JOIN OUR SPOND GROUP
Join the Mahjong in the Sun group in Spond.
Once you’re in, you’ll be able to see matches other players have created and create your own.
Think of Spond as our matchmaking hub for the next four weeks.
See a match that works for you? Join it!
Want to play at a certain place or time? Create an event!
Have friends you specifically want to play with? Invite them to your match!
2. CREATE A MATCH
In the Mahjong in the Sun Spond group:
Events → + → Event
Add:
Match name: Example: Mahjong at Coastal Wine
Description: Add any helpful details about the match.
Date + start time
Location
Host: You
You can schedule your match anywhere you’d like — a local restaurant, coffee shop, clubhouse, someone’s home or another Mahj-friendly location.
3. SET THE MAX NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS TO 3
This part is important!
Mahjong requires 4 total players, but because you are the host, set scroll to the bottom where it says View more settings:
Max number of participants = 3
That allows three additional players to join you, creating your table of four.
Once those three spots are filled, Spond will automatically stop additional players from joining and can create a waiting list.
4. MORE THAN ONE TABLE? CREATE ANOTHER EVENT!
Meeting somewhere and have enough players for two tables?
Amazing!
Create two separate Spond events, with each event representing one table of four.
For example:
Mahjong at Coastal Wine — Table 1
Host + 3 participants
Mahjong at Coastal Wine — Table 2
Host + 3 participants
This keeps each match organized and makes it clear who is playing at each table.
PLAY. SCORE. SUBMIT.
Play your match using our Bambird Scramble-style scoring.
After your match is complete, the HOST is responsible for submitting the final names + scores for all four players.
ON GOOGLE FORMS SUBMIT:Player Name — Final Match Score for all four players.
Laura will record the results on the No Off Season Mahj Leaderboard.
Only scores submitted by the host will be counted.
TWO WAYS TO WIN EVERY WEEK

Each week, we’ll award TWO prizes:
TOP CUMULATIVE SCORE
Awarded to the player with the highest cumulative score from a minimum of TWO matches played that week.
MOST SOCIAL MAHJ’ER
Awarded to the player who plays with the most different people during the week.
So yes — there is officially a reason to mix up your foursome!
WEEKLY DEADLINE
Each week runs: Monday – Sunday
All matches and scores must be completed and submitted by: Sunday at 11:59 PM
Weekly winners will be announced every Monday. Then the leaderboard resets and we do it all again!
